Esmeralda Covarrubias, IBCLC

  • International Board Certified Lactation Consultant
  • Certified Breastfeeding Peer Counselor
  • Spanish Medical Interpreter

Esmeralda’s first son was a healthy, full term baby.  Due to delivery complications she faced many lactation challenges and breastfed him two months.  The following year, she delivered her second son prematurely.  He was born at 28 weeks, weighing 2lbs. 15oz.  After delivery, Esmeralda met with a Breastfeeding Peer Counselor about providing milk for her baby.  Unsure if she would have success after her first experience, but wanting the best for her tiny son, she said, “I’ll give it a try.”  Esmeralda credits the information and support given to her by the Peer Counselors with her success in providing milk for her baby.  With much determination, she exclusively provided milk until he was beyond 15 months old.

In 2009 Esmeralda completed her peer counselor training program and officially joined the team in 2011.  Esmeralda’s ability to speak both English and Spanish, and her completion of a medical interpreter training program make her a great asset to our Spanish-speaking population.  Esmeralda describes her favorite part of her role at Rush: “I love sharing my experience of having a baby in the NICU because it’s another way of telling the parents that they’re not alone; I understand just what they’re going through.”

Esmeralda enjoys traveling to international breastfeeding conferences to share her experience as both a mother and a breastfeeding peer counselor.  In 2016, Esmeralda achieved board certification as a lactation consultant.
